Mvb Extends Eureka Series Lead
MVB Racing posted Sunday November 22, 2009.
A fast finishing second place from Lilydale’s Mike Van Bremen last night (November 21) at Mt Gambier’s Borderline Raceway in the second round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Series has extended his series lead to 21-points.
On an express paced racetrack due to late afternoon showers, Van Bremen’s team nailed the setup for the final, racing from fifth position on the grid to a narrow second, almost passing eventual winner Brett Milburn.
As Van Bremen emerged from the Action Alliance V6 with plenty of perspiration pouring from his face, he revealed how he battled sickness late in the week to take to the wheel.
“Late in the week I got crook, it went through the whole family, so I felt pretty lethargic, but I battled through and I’m glad I did,” he said.
Van Bremen qualified in fifth position for the reduced 25-lap final and with bad weather surrounding the venue, the important top six time trial was scrapped, stopping Van Bremen from moving forward on the grid before the final.
“Unfortunately with the late night and weather around, the time trial was cancelled. That can be a real opportunity for some drivers to make inroads into the final before it’s even ran.
“I would have been pretty confident of setting a decent time and who knows I could have started closer to the front,” said MVB.
Starting from fifth position obviously meant Van Bremen had to pass some fast cars. With two laps remaining on a restart, ‘The Flying Dutchman’ was within striking distance of the lead but could not pull off the winning move.
When asked if he was happy to settle for second to secure points for the overall series, Van Bremen was quick to point out that he was shooting for the win and if there was an opportunity to pass, he was going to have a shot.
“I was pretty happy to pass Johnny Vogels and keep him behind me on the track and in the series points, but I also wanted to win the final as I’ve never won two in a row before.
“I had a couple of goes at Brett (Milburn) and in particular on the final lap but couldn’t quite pull it off, I was still happy with second as it has us in a good position,” said Van Bremen.
Throughout the week MVB Racing will gear up for the next round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Sprintcar Series this coming Saturday night (November 28) at Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium.
